The biggest events of the year are already behind us, drinking in bars forever won’t be enough for your health, and time for spending time at home has begun. The same thing that makes you climb the wall at the end of winter, and now cozy evenings at home look like a good alternative to the raging autumn outside. When choosing a film, I realized that I wanted to watch something subcultural. About skinheads! Why not? But which one exactly? And how many of these do I even remember/know?
Having briefly looked through the existing collections, I realized that they are quite outdated and I have something to supplement them with. I think it will be interesting, I present to your attention my selection of films about skinheads.
I tried to make it as diverse as possible so that everyone could find something for themselves. And one more thing, everything is simple here, on top are cult films, below are lesser-known and relatively new films. The number in the rating is just a number and means almost nothing.
1. This is England (2006)
Almost everyone watched it. The film is a cult film, no doubt about it. But if by some miracle he passed you by, then this must be corrected urgently. The plot takes place in 1983 and is told from the perspective of 12-year-old Sean Field. One day, returning after school, he meets a group of skinheads and gradually joins their ranks. An excellent film, everything is on the level: the plot, the actors, the characters surviving against the backdrop of complete hopelessness and a hopeless future, the skinhead movement through the eyes of a teenager. In a word - I recommend it!
Just look at the actors; among them you won’t find ideal Hollywood stars with their sweetly feigned smiles. In This Is England the actors look like real people and behave accordingly; you want to believe them and want to empathize with them. This is probably where one of the main secrets of his cult status lies.
And now a few words about what may have escaped some viewers. If the film seems somewhat plush and naive, then the three seasons immediately following it (“This is England 86”, “This is England 88” and “This is England 90”) of the mini-series completely beat this feeling away. But the quality is not inferior and even in some places surpasses the original picture. As for me, this is a unique case in cinema when the series retains the entire main cast and so organically continues the original film.
“This is England” had an extremely positive influence on the formation of my sympathy for original English cinema, at the same time introducing me to the work of Joseph Gilgun (“Misfits,” “Preacher”). If you suddenly decide to watch a movie with your lady love, but she refuses and even Gilgun doesn’t save the situation, then tell us that Joseph really dated the actress who plays Lol (Vicky McClure). And if that doesn’t help, then say that they will get married, but don’t mention that this will happen in the mini-series.
At this point I’ll finish praising him and let him go read about the next film, but remember - if you don’t watch “This is England” after this, then you’re not my brother!
2. Skins/Skinheads (Romper Stomper, 1992)
Also an extremely famous film, but this time dedicated to another branch of culture - Nazi skinheads. For the most part, the plot shows us a love triangle between two gang members Hendo (Russell Crowe), Davey (Daniel Pollock) and the girl Gabrielle (Jacqueline McKenzie) who has joined them.
The picture is heavy, viscous, dirty, difficult to look at. By the way, there was some romance and drama among the cast. Oddly enough, Russell Crowe is not at all involved here. Daniel Pollock had an affair with Jacqueline MacKenzie, and a few months before the film's premiere, he committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train. Just like that.
In 1992, the film took second place in the box office in its home country of Australia, and was later shown at 20 festivals around the world. At the Seattle International Film Festival, Russell Crowe received the award for best actor, and at the Stockholm festival, Jacqueline McKenzie received the award for best actress.
3. American History X (1998)
I’m even afraid to imagine what influence he had in his time on the development of bonehead culture in our country. How many people decided to devote themselves to this, began to shave their heads, wear heavy boots and repeat Derek Vinyard's tattoos on their bodies. Although the film, by its design, was supposed to motivate never to do that.
He's so popular that I just don't see the point in writing anything about him. Well... besides the fact that Edward Norton played his role very cool, there is Edward Furlong in a relatively adequate state and the word “fuck” is pronounced 205 times throughout the film.
4. Made in Britain (Made in Britain, 1982)
A picture about youth, rebellious spirit, disobedience to the system, about the most difficult and terrible period of growing up - puberty. The plot is banal and very simple, it can be told in just two words, but there is no desire to spoil it.
I don’t think many people have seen this film, although photos are widely circulated on the Internet. Nothing special, except that “Made in Britain” marked the acting debut of the leading actor, Tim Roth.
5. The Fanatic (The Believer, 2001)
Black but white; sweet but salty; a Jew, but a NS skinhead - played, according to the classics, on opposites. This is the whole plot, two entities coexist in one body of a 22-year-old neo-Nazi who attended a Jewish school. There is almost no typical trash and frenzy in the film, but there is philosophy with religious overtones. If we abstract, the picture turned out to be very deep and I still remember the last scene, and that means something.
By the way, there is also a trick here: if the duchess refuses to watch, then just whisper two words in her ear and it’s done.
6. The Frenchman (Un Français, 2015)
A film that passed by. I remember watching it not too long ago, but the details are lost and elude me.
Marco Lopez wants to leave the ranks of the ultra-right and start leading a normal life, but getting rid of the past is not at all easy. This elementary and banal plot was rated 5.5 out of 10 possible points on KinoPoisk.
Maybe some of you will like it more and remember it better. Good for you, but I have no desire to review it.
7. Absolute Power (Imperium, 2016)
Yes, Harry Potter throws zigs, didn't you think so? Daniel Radcliffe is trying not to be a hostage to one role and is experimenting with new images, some work better, like in “The Swiss Army Man,” and some not so much.
In this film, Radcliffe plays FBI agent Nate Foster, who joins a neo-Nazi group in order to expose it and prevent a terrorist attack. The film cannot boast of a cleverly twisted script, unexpected plot twists, and for the most part relies only on the performance of one actor.
“Absolute Power” is a light movie that does not compete for awards, which will go well with the mood and beer after a hard week of work.
8. Green Room (2015)
Here they were so surprised. Just think about it, this is an action thriller about how a group of punk rockers comes to perform at a concert with Nazi skins and becomes eyewitnesses to the murder of a girl in the dressing room. Then the hunt for witnesses begins. The film gradually picks up the pace, there are stupid moments, and there are trashy ones. There are even very tough ones, for example, when Amber (Imogen Poots is the name of the actress, if anything) releases the guts of the man assigned to guard them with a stationery knife. Imogen, by the way, is a clear highlight of this film; there is someone to look at while everyone is being stupid and whining (a lot). Beautiful in short, I like it, and you all will too.
Speaking of the cast, everything is very serious here. Starring the tragically deceased Anton Yelchin. There is also Joe Cole, whom many know from the series (“Peaky Blinders” / “Sharpened Caps” / “Sharpened Blinders”), and the main antagonist and criminal brain of the neonasts is Patrick Stewart, whom everyone knows from his facepalm from Star Trek (a joke, but not at all).
Don't have high hopes for the film, but it's definitely worth watching once.
9. Skin (2008)
The creators seem to have been inspired by the film “The Fanatic” and decided to lay out as many contradictions and reasons as possible to explain teenage aggression. The film takes place in the late 1970s. The main character, 17-year-old Frankie, spends most of his time with his black friend Jeffrey. Frankie also has a difficult family situation - his mother was diagnosed with cancer, and he almost completely ignores his Jewish father. Of course, the desperate protagonist gets involved with a gang of right-wing skinheads and participates with them in street attacks and pogroms.
It's quite difficult for me to evaluate this film, definitely saying good or bad. I guess I'll leave it up to the viewer to judge. But for reference, on KinoPoisk he received 6 out of 10 points.
10. Shot into the void (Shot Caller, 2017)
I would like to draw your attention to this picture. It's not really about skinheads, it's more about the white brotherhood and how people survive in prison and what they have to do for it. I was lucky to see it in the cinema. It’s a day off, an evening show, and there are about 20 people in the theater. I admit, there were some fears that the film would turn out to be complete nonsense, but fortunately, they were not confirmed.
I’ll start right away with a little criticism, but it’s addressed not to the creators, but to the localizers. If you’re not in the know, then everything will go smoothly, but the chair under me began to smoke a little. In prison the main character’s name is Money, but here they can’t leave it like that and start getting creative. As a result, not the last person of the white brotherhood receives the Russian-Spanish nickname from the translators - Bablos.
Another point is the communication of gang members with each other. One of the popular tattoos of the white brotherhood is a woodpecker, the inscription “Wood”, “100% Wood”, “Рeckerwood”, “100% Рeckerwood” and the slang address “Wood” is considered the norm among its people, but we could not find a better analogy than "club". And so they walk around and say, “Hey, dumbass!”, “Yes, dumbass.” This doesn't sound very common, but it's very ridiculous.
Now a little about the film itself, so that no one thinks that it is slag. The picture turned out to be quite mature, with a very life-like plot and a slightly fantastic ending (but that’s why we love movies). The plot is that the hero Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), being drunk, gets behind the wheel and gets into a car accident, in which a person dies through his fault. Charge-trial-deal, and now he is already trampling the asphalt of the prison courtyard for exercise and he is faced with a difficult choice between two chairs.
Unable to fight back alone, he is forced to join the Aryans to save his life. More assignments from the gang mean a longer sentence, and the main action takes place when Bablos is released from prison, but cannot leave the brotherhood.
11. Skin/Skin (Skin, 2018)
As a BONUS. Last year's film, which relatively recently received Russian dubbing and ended up online. The film tells the story of a member of a neo-Nazi group, Bryon Widner, who falls in love with a girl and wants to leave the “family.” Bryon is covered from head to toe with tattoos that mark him as someone he no longer wants to be. The last chance for him is to turn to local anti-fascists, who provide an opportunity to leave behind the past and start a new life.
The story is largely crumpled, partly absurd and in some places may seem simply stupid. I was ready to criticize the film to smithereens, but it turned out that it is based on real events.

In the near future, a private group of developers is planning to release a computer game Sharp Shooter, the hero of which kills police officers and the National Guard using various improvised means, sets their cars on fire with Molotov cocktails, etc. The authors of the game say that they created a game “about something they are very familiar with” themselves.
The title of the game refers to the subculture of anti-fascist skinheads SHARP (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudices), the symbols of which are generously depicted in the protagonist’s apartment. At the same time, the victims of the shooter in the video gameplay of the game published by HeadHunters Games (essentially, this is just a group of amateur developers) are mainly law enforcement officers in uniform: hero on two demos crushes them with a scooter, beats them with a weight, cuts them with shards of glass, poisons them with gas from a can, shoots them with a firearm of limited damage (traumatic), etc.
The game also includes the ability to set police cars, “wrong” office premises, etc. on fire with a Molotov cocktail.
The fact that these are not joke videos is confirmed by an interview recently given by the game developers to the Avtonom magazine, popular among antifa. There are a number of interesting points in it.
“We decided to make a game about something we are very familiar with,” they say. - We have participated and are trying to participate in protests and other actions. Yes, the state has almost tightened the screws and was better before (especially before the “Khimki case”), but the social activity of recent months inspires optimism.
Representatives of the “red skinheads” have indeed previously participated in clashes with the police, for example, during the G8 summit in St. Petersburg in 2006. In 2009–2011 in Moscow, leftists repeatedly set fire to the buildings of police departments and strongholds of the police, administration, prosecutor's offices, military registration and enlistment offices, etc., then reporting this on their Internet resources. The most famous of these was the site “Black Bloc” (this is the name of the armed detachment of anarchists at Western anti-globalization rallies).
The apogee of leftist terror was the explosions of homemade bombs on the territory of the Zamoskvorechye police station on May 3, 2011 and a traffic police post on the 22nd km of the Moscow Ring Road on June 7 of the same year. In the first case, a police officer was injured; in the other, casualties were avoided, although they were clearly planned. A statement on the Black Bloc website, accompanied by a video of the explosion, said that traffic police officers “are no better than other police officers and have long deserved retribution.”
Massive street battles between antifa and riot police are also implemented in the game. Antifa - no longer skinheads, but anarchists with their black and red flags and in black clothes, headbands and glasses typical of the Black Bloc - are armed with scraps of rebar and throw Molotov cocktails at the riot police. In their public page on the social network VKontakte, the creators of the game accompanied a screenshot of these battles with text announcing “to arrange the biggest mass fight in the history of FPS games” (First-Person Shooter - first-person shooter).
In the accompanying text, the game’s creators add that “our game does not focus only on subcultural violence,” that is, the hero’s victims are not only various fascists, but also representatives of the authorities.
